End of Life for Billings

If you’ve been paying attention to Marketcircle’s lack of attention given to Billings over the last couple of years, you might not have been surprised by their announcement today that Billings has reached its end of life.

Version 3.7.8 adds some minor enhancements (the full release notes don’t seem to be available), but this will be the last update. Marketcircle says that most of their customers are wanting the features of Billings Pro over those in Billings, so developing for the smaller customer base doesn’t make sense.

But does it make sense to move to Billings Pro? Since Pro has been targeted at multi-user operations, many single users have—I think—overlooked the outstanding value that is in the app. The features in Billings Pro that compelled me to switch a couple years ago are Daylite integration, remote syncing (as opposed to Wi-Fi-only), and invoice customization—all incredibly useful to a sole proprietor.

In the past, the biggest obstacle to purchasing Billings Pro has been its price in comparison to its less-capable sibling. At $200 one-time for self-hosted, or $20 a month for a single user in Marketcircle Cloud, it’s easy to see why one might opt for Billings at $40 (there is no Cloud option for Billings).

Given the second half of Marketcircle’s announcement, though, there’s really no reason to not to switch to Billings Pro. The company has slashed the prices on their cloud service by half (sorry, no change in the self-hosted version), so the price for most users will be only $10 a month, and it’s possible to pay even less on an annual plan—$69 per year (less than $6 a month) if purchased before July 31.

If you do choose to wait, Marketcircle will continue to offer support to Billings users until June 30, 2014.
